Sampling and Analysis
Sampling and analysis of both inbound and outbound products is one of the most important steps in the sale of coal. At Docks Creek, the utmost care is given to all samples taken to insure the integrity of the results.
All inbound or outbound product shipped by truck is sampled upon receipt or exiting the facility using a PSI auger. Every truck is sampled upon entering or exiting the dock and is composited with samples taken from other trucks from the same mine on a daily basis. At the end of the day, all samples are analyzed with results provided the following morning.
Outbound samples are taken while coal is loaded into barges with a James A Redding two stage sampling system installed at Docks Creek in 2008. This sampler is very efficient in its operation and is always maintained in excellent working order in accordance with ASTM. In addition to the coal sampling system, Docks Creek utilizes an onsite coal analyzer. The Thermo Scientific CQM, is a fixed geometry PGNAA coal analyzer used for optimum blending precision during barge loading.
Outbound samples are taken while coal is loaded into railcar with an HH & S two stage sampling system installed at Docks Creek in 2008. This sampler is very efficient in its operation and is always maintained in excellent working order in accordance with ASTM.
Weight Determination
For coal received by truck, inbound weights are determined by certified scales. Our Thurman scales are calibrated on six month intervals and certified by the State of West Virginia Bureau of Weights and Measures to assure accuracy. Any outbound shipments by truck also are weighed with these scales. Draft surveys are used to determine weights on both inbound and outbound barges. Trains are received based on weights provided by certified railroad scales. Outbound Unit-train shipments can be provided with certified batch weights from our system.
Safety
Providing and maintaining a safe work place is the number one priority at Docks Creek. We believe that a safe work place is an efficient work place and the customer receives the benefits of that. Our management and work force work very closely with governmental agencies to maintain all equipment according to all applicable laws and consistently receive praise from the agencies for our commitment to safety. Weekly safety meetings emphasize the importance of maintaining safe work conditions. Annual day long safety training and refresher courses for both production and office personnel are mandatory. We have volunteered and are used on occasion by the agencies to try out new safety training videos and presentations, as well as other programs they may develop. Other site based programs, including random drug testing, promote safe personal lifestyles as well.
Commitment to the Environment
All
personnel at Aquila Dock are firmly committed to being good stewards of
our environment. Because of our rural setting and lifestyle, we all
understand the value of maintaining and preserving our rivers,
wildlife, and mountains. Particular attention is given to assuring that
we properly treat any water discharges from the site, and that we
minimize any airborne dust problems that can occur at our facility.
Frequent regulatory inspections confirm our efforts are successful.
